Not solely because of the 4k, but because it will usually have a smart os, slightly louder speakers, more HDMI ports and will be usable in a bright environment. At that price point though they're just better off getting a cheap 4k tv from Best Buy or Walmart. Which is straight up unrealistic unless they get lucky with a used unit. I literally see post on this subreddit asking for bare minimum native 1080p (but maybe 4k) resolution, extremely bright 3k+ lumens, great sound, smart tv feature, durable and they're only willing to spend $250. And 90% of the time the price gap between the Chinese knock off and refurbished unit isn't that significant ($100-$200). All of those things determine how an image will look, even if the environment conditions are not optimal. You're not just gaining resolution, but gaining better colors, contrast ratio and more luminance (not some inflated number) on-top of a better build quality. You show someone a cheap Chinese 480p projector next to a refurbished known brand (Optoma, Benq, Epson) 1080p or even 720p and they would be able to spot the difference immediately. But, I have to disagree with your statement that people don't care about resolution. That's fine, people can choose to spend their money however they want to, even if it's essentially a waste. If they just want the gimmick of a big ass screen then they should just look on Amazon's ranking and pick the cheapest thing with the best reviews. People tend to come on this subreddit expecting to get champagne with a malt liquor budget, it's just not realistic and they're better off just saving a little longer for something that will give better image quality and durability. Still it's way cheaper than a 4ktv of equal size, but it's still an investment. You're going to want to invest in a screen, paint the surrounding area to reduce reflection and invest in a quality sound set-up (budget 2.0 can be had for under $300). Sure you can just throw the image on a blank wall and call it a day, but if you really want fully utilize your projector. Once you get into the "budget enthusiasts" range (sub 1k) you're really getting decent quality, but limited to 1080p. At that price point the person would just be better off going with a cheaper 4k set from TCL, etc. But, for someone only wanting to spend $100-$250, they're going to get size but no where near decent image quality.
